I was fortunate to participate in the Broadway Teachers Workshop in New York City this summer. I WAS ON BROADWAY!!!! I met drama teachers from around the world and took workshops taught by current broadway actors, directors and choreographers. I learned a lot of new techniques, refreshed and dusted off some good ol' practices I had forgotten about but most all, I am rejuvenated to begin the new year. I was so very lucky to see 6 broadway shows while I was there. (School of Rock, Something Rotten, Hamilton, On Your Feet, Shuffle Along and Fun Home). The last 4 shows we had "talk backs" after the show. We stayed in the audience and the cast came out to talk to us. The one reoccurring question for them was; "What would you tell the students we teach about becoming a performer?" The answer was always the same. "Have fun, Believe in yourself, Be yourself, Be kind and Never give up. Your time will come." Every single talk back the actors spoke about how drama in school gave them confidence and the ability to follow their dreams. One actor went a far to say that drama saved their life. It was the one aspect of high school that made him stay in school. Theatre is like that.... we build a supportive atmosphere to explore, be creative, show emotion, problem solve and most of all have fun. New York was a dream come true for me! I loved every minute of it and would return in a heart beat. (Only to visit though.... it was hot a smelly)
